By using a broad spectrum of light wavelengths, it absorbs excessive pigment in the skin to restore a more even complexion. As an additional benefit, this non-abrasive treatment stimulates collagen production, which is key to improving overall skin tone. This treatment is also non-ablative, meaning that no skin is removed during treatment.
Why get IPL treatment?
Common IPL uses include the following:
- Vascular lesions (birthmarks)
- Hyperpigmentation (patches of skin are darker than the surrounding skin)
- Hair removal
- Sun damage
Additional uses include reducing the appearance of scars, lightening darker patches of skin, and improving the appearance of spider veins. This procedure works in a similar way to laser resufacing because it uses light to treat skin problems and rejuvenate one’s complexion.
IPL works by using light energy to target the color pigments in the hair and skin. This outpatient procedure produces optimal results using a non-invasive treatment. There is minimal downtime, and the patient can usually return to their work or activities immediately following treatment.
Am I A Good Candidate for IPL?
IPL works best on patients with dark hair and fair skin. Since this procedure only targets the color pigments, it cannot treat white hairs. Patients who have darker skin may be treated but will need to be thoroughly examined before the treatment begins, and we will need to proceed with caution.
Your skin type and condition, extent of procedure, and aesthetic goals will determine the results of IPL treatment. Some short-term side effects might include redness and swelling.
